Before we dive into all things CBD lotion, let’s talk about what CBD is, where it comes from, and what products you can find it in.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for "cannabidiol." Cannabidiol is a plant compound naturally occurring in the flowers and leaves of the cannabis sativa plant. While the cannabis plant is famous for producing psychoactive effects, it's only the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compound that's responsible for the "high."

There are actually two different types of cannabis sativa plants, one primarily containing THC, and the other primarily containing CBD, which is commonly referred to as a "hemp plant." CBD is not psychoactive like THC, therefore it produces no euphoric feeling or “high.” Although both CBD and THC are processed by our body's endocannabinoid system, the two interact with our cannabinoid receptors very differently, which is why THC is notorious for a high that CBD can't even produce even though they can come from the same plant.

CBD has been used for centuries, dating all the way back to ancient Chinese medicine, for various indications including pain relief, promotion of regular sleep, and maintaining skin health. In fact, there is evidence that the ancients used their versions of topical CBD products for improvement in skin health and immune health. Even though CBD usage is definitely on-trend in 2020, it’s been around long enough to be more than just a passing fad.

Where Does CBD Come From?

CBD oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant and added to products like oral capsules, tinctures, edibles, hair products, beauty and wellness products, and CBD creams, lotions, and salves. It’s important to know how much CBD each product contains and what type of CBD it contains.

CBD can generally be added to a product in three different ways:

CBD isolate oil. CBD isolate oil describes oil that contains CBD only. The leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds of the hemp plant contain over 144 cannabinoids, along with nutrients, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and terpenes. When these ingredients are extracted from the hemp plant along with CBD, they produce what is referred to as the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect is the term used to describe how all the elements of the hemp plant work synergistically to produce increased benefit in a CBD product. CBD isolate does not produce the entourage effect because the only compound extracted from the hemp plant in a CBD isolate is CBD itself, and CBD alone.

Broad Spectrum CBD. Broad spectrum CBD refers to CBD oil that has been extracted from the hemp plant along with all of the aforementioned plant compounds and essentials except THC. The species of cannabis sativa plant from which CBD is derived contains a small portion of THC, much less than the other variety which produces marijuana. Broad spectrum CBD is a CBD oil that is extracted with all the plant compounds except this trace amount of THC, however, because the THC is left out, broad spectrum CBD does not produce the entourage effect.

Full spectrum CBD. Full spectrum CBD oil refers to CBD oil which has been extracted from the hemp plant along with all compounds of the hemp plant, including a trace amount of THC, usually less than 0.3%. This is not enough THC to make you feel altered or “high,” and therefore is generally safe for use. Full spectrum CBD oil is the only type of CBD oil that can produce the entourage effect because it contains every single chemical compound and natural mineral that can be extracted from the hemp plant.

KULCBD’s product line uses only high-grade, full spectrum CBD, as well as THC-free broad spectrum CBD. Most of our products are full spectrum CBD and are capable of producing the entourage effect. In fact, all of our skincare products, including our lotions, contain full spectrum CBD in order to provide the best health benefits we can.

What Products Contain CBD?

As previously stated, CBD can be found in numerous products that can provide a wide range of health benefits. Some of the most promising uses of CBD oil, however, have been found when CBD is used in skincare products. CBD lotions, CBD creams, CBD ointments, and CBD salves, in particular, are able to penetrate deeply into the skin, below the top layer, to provide nourishing, moisturizing effects, along with delivering the other benefits that CBD has to offer.

There are two types of CBD lotion that are particularly effective, and should be used congruently: one is a day time lotion, the other, a nighttime lotion.

Here are some of the benefits CBD lotion can offer:

Anti-aging. Even the ancients claimed CBD was an anti-aging powerhouse, and we don’t disagree. Lab studies aren't disagreeing either. In fact, studies show that CBD can be a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin E and C. Antioxidants are crucial in keeping our skin looking young and youthful. They work by protecting our skin against free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that harm stable skin cells, which can result in the skin aging prematurely. As such, antioxidants are important in our battle against aging.

Superior hydration. If you’ve had experiences with medical marijuana (or recreational, we aren’t judging) you may remember feeling thirsty, or feeling like your eyes were dry. As such, you may think that CBD may cause your skin to feel dry since it is a cousin of THC. This is simply not the case. CBD is actually an incredibly effective moisturizer on its own. CBD contains fatty acids that actually encourage collagen production. More collagen means more moisture for your skin. Collagen helps plump the skin and therefore allows it to retain more moisture. When your skin is properly hydrated, it looks and feels more firm, smooth, and has an overall healthier glow. Properly hydrated skin also increases skin function, like turning over and replacing dead skin cells. Faster cell turnover means new skin cells develop quicker, which keeps skin looking young and fresh. Especially when paired with ingredients like coconut oil or beeswax, moisturizing effects of topical CBD work even better.

Oil buster. It may seem crazy to use an oil to treat oily skin, but that’s just what you’re able to do with CBD oil products. CBD oil relies on the scientific properties of oil to effectively combat oily skin. Science tells us that oil dissolves oil. This is referred to as the "oil cleansing method." Using an oil to dissolve another oil is one of the best ways to treat oily skin. When CBD oil lotion is applied to oily areas of your skin, the CBD oil effectively dissolves the sebum on the skin’s surface, which is what causes the skin to be slick and shiny. CBD oil won’t leave a filmy residue either, dissolving the excess oil produced by your sebaceous glands and helping to regulate oil production so that, over time, you experience less oil production in once affected areas. Less oil usually equates to fewer clogged pores, less need for continual powder application, and a more even complexion.

Combination skin hero. If you’ve suffered from combination skin (skin that is consistently dry in some areas while oily in others), you know from experience how difficult it can be to find a product that treats your entire face without leaving affected areas dry, irritated, or greasy. If this sounds like you, you’ll love CBD lotion. CBD lotion is an ideal product for combination skin because CBD hydrates and dissolves oil, effectively dissolving sebum in oily areas of your skin (like your t-zone) and moisturizing and hydrating dry areas, leaving your skin more balanced.

Calming. CBD has known calming properties. As such, when used in a CBD lotion, it has the ability to promote calmness and relief in the skin. Especially when combined with essential oils like menthol or other calming substances like aloe vera, CBD lotions can be awesome additions to health care routines for those trying to manage their skin health and skin conditions.

CBD lotion is a great way to reap the benefits of CBD, with little to no side effects for most users. Full spectrum CBD lotion produces the entourage effect, which delivers the most benefits of CBD to your skin. CBD lotion can promote skin health, correcting areas that are overly oily, and hydrating areas that are excessively dry. CBD lotion also has calming properties that can help soothe irritated skin. Remember, using a CBD lotion morning and evening will produce the best results in the shortest amount of time, with continued use providing overall support in maintaining healthy skin!
