It’s great that you’re interested in adding CBD to your health and wellness routine! Before we dive into how CBD is best absorbed, let’s give you a quick primer on this wonderful extract!

CBD: A Primer

Cannabidiol, or “CBD” is an all-natural chemical compound called a cannabinoid found in a particular species of the hemp plant. Cannabinoids may interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which controls things like hunger, pain, anxiety, and movement, and provide relief for ailments associated with these processes.

While nearly all cannabinoids have some therapeutic effect, the two most commonly used by medicinal and wellness purposes are CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol, or “THC.” THC is the cannabinoid found in marijuana, and also one of the few psychoactive cannabinoids found in the species of the hemp plant. CBD is not psychoactive.

CBD is normally extracted from the hemp plant and added to products for use either topically or for ingestion internally. When ingested, CBD can be taken in the form of capsules, tinctures, oils, or edibles.

The question then arises, how is CBD best absorbed by the body? Also, if you are using CBD as a topical (say, for skincare benefits) what products are best for allowing the CBD to penetrate your skin deeply and deliver results as quickly as possible?

We know. Your head is spinning. Let’s work on straightening it all out.

KULCBD is your go-to for these types of CBD questions. We work with some of the world’s top producers of CBD to ensure our products are formulated with not only the highest quality broad and full spectrum CBD oils, but also to ensure that the products we produce are absorbed quickly and effectively for their intended purposes.

In other words, if our research shows us that the best way to deliver the soothing effects of CBD to relieve that occasional muscle pain is to infuse the oil into a topical cream along with other pain-alleviating ingredients, that’s what we produce and offer to you!

When we look at how to best deliver CBD oil to your body, we need to first consider the use. What are we actually trying to help? For instance, if you’re taking CBD oil because you’re looking to relax and feel a little calmer, a topical cream is likely not the best vehicle to deliver your CBD! Conversely, if you want to take aim at reducing the appearance of some fine lines and wrinkles you’ve noticed around your eyes, taking CBD capsules may help, but a topical solution will likely get the job done faster.

Once you consider the ailment, you need next consider the dosage or frequency. This will determine how much of the product you need to use and how often to see the best results in the quickest way possible. You also need to consider your lifestyle. There are some methods of consuming CBD which may not be an option for you. For instance, if you are a non-smoker and do not wish to inhale a product, then vaping a CBD product is likely not a viable option for you, no matter how effective the vape may be.

Let’s look at two of the most popular ways to administer CBD to the body, how these methods are absorbed, and what products are available for use in these manners.

CBD Taken Orally

By far the most popular method of taking CBD is orally, whether you swallow a tincture, capsule, or oil, or add it to food or a drink. Taking CBD oil orally is effective, but it is not the fastest method.

The fastest method of absorbing CBD is through inhalation, although there are definite safety concerns with this method. For you to inhale a CBD product, the product must be absorbed in your lungs. The CDC currently discourages the use of vapes and vaping products due to the lack of safety standards of the products and the harmful effects they can have on your lungs. This is likely why the ingestion of CBD orally is the most common method.

When CBD is ingested orally, it can be done in two ways: either ingested completely (in other words, the CBD is swallowed in liquid or solid form) or taken sublingually. When CBD is taken sublingually, it will almost always be taken in a tincture form, and held under the tongue for several minutes before what remains is swallowed. Of these two forms of taking CBD orally, taking it sublingually is the most effective way to absorb the CBD. Here’s why.

When CBD is swallowed, it has to pass through the digestive system. This is a long process involving the stomach, liver, and intestines. When the CBD passes through the stomach and liver, it is broken down by the acids and is metabolized. This is referred to as the “first pass” effect, and it basically refers to your liver just doing its job, which unfortunately means breaking down and metabolizing some of the CBD you just ingested, meaning not as much of it gets absorbed because some of it gets metabolized.

Fortunately, a study found that ingesting CBD along with fatty acids can effectively allow the user to skip the first-pass effect, and help the CBD absorb at a higher rate than if taken without fatty acids. This can be great news for users who prefer to take their CBD orally. In fact, KULCBD specifically designs our CBD wellness tinctures with multi-chain triglyceride (“MCT”) oil as the delivery method for CBD and not alcohol. MCT is known as “good fat,” and is the perfect fatty acid for allowing CBD to be delivered orally and absorbed more properly than a CBD oil that uses alcohol as the delivery solvent.

CBD Taken Sublingually

Another method of oral ingestion is to take CBD sublingually. This means you would take your CBD oil and place a dose under your tongue. You would hold the oil there for a couple of minutes until most of it was absorbed.

Many people prefer this method because it allows the mucous membranes in your mouth to absorb the CBD, which allows the CBD to “skip the line” so to speak, and bypass the digestive system. When CBD isn’t digested, it isn’t broken down or metabolized in a way that its benefits are less effective. When CBD isn’t broken down or metabolized, more of it reaches the bloodstream more quickly. As such, taking CBD sublingually is a great way to get fast, effective use of CBD.

KULCBD’s tinctures are perfect for consuming sublingually. In fact, they are also available in five different flavors, so you can savor and enjoy the experience. Our tinctures never contain alcohol and also contain a terpene blend, which can help deliver the CBD more effectively to your body.

CBD Applied Topically

The benefits of CBD oil for your skin are numerous. As a major antioxidant even more powerful than even vitamins C & E, applying CBD oil to your skin helps your skin fight off environmental stressors that can damage skin, and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

CBD oil is also an excellent vehicle for restoring hydration to your skin. Because it is both a moisturizer and an emollient, it can help seal moisture inside of the skin to make it appear smoother and fuller. Even oily and combination skin types can benefit from the use of CBD oil. The result of using a high-quality CBD moisturizer is skin that looks smoother, firmer, and more balanced in terms of oiliness.

CBD oil is also a great soothing agent. Irritated skin can reap the calming effects of CBD oil, which can help remove the appearance of redness and prevent new irritation from starting. These are a really great combination of oils that are incredibly beneficial to your skin.

CBD products that are applied topically do not reach the bloodstream, as the skin is a thick barrier that prevents this from happening. What does occur when you apply CBD products to your skin, is relief delivered to one specific and localized area (like your face). This isn’t a problem, since you’re using your topical CBD skincare products to target your skin!

KULCBD’s entire CBD skincare line features a four-step skincare routine with products that contain not only high quality, full spectrum CBD oil, but a rich blend of plant botanicals and a proprietary blend of lactobacillus probiotics. The combination of CBD oil and probiotics ensures your skin is not only beautiful and glowing, but healthy too! A probiotic helps regulate the amount of “good” bacteria on the surface of your skin and eliminate the bad bacteria.

CBD oil is absorbed into the body and bloodstream in different ways and in different amounts of time depending on how the CBD is administered, how much is administered and is specific to the individual user. Oral ingestion is the most popular method of taking CBD, and taking it sublingually is desirable as the CBD will not be subjected to being metabolized in the digestive system; instead, it will travel directly to the bloodstream, meaning more of it will get there faster than swallowing a CBD oil product. Applying a CBD oil product topically will deliver relief to that specific skin area, and will not reach the bloodstream.
